Brand Mention Rate

The percentage of tracked AI prompts in which a brand is named at least once.

TL;DR

Brand mention rate is the percentage of tracked AI prompts where your brand gets named at least once, the most fundamental measure of whether you're even in the conversation.

Explain it like I've never heard of this

Imagine you ask an AI assistant 100 questions that buyers in your category actually ask. In how many of those answers does your brand name show up at all?

That count, turned into a percentage, is your brand mention rate. It doesn't care whether you're praised, ranked first, or cited, only whether you were named. Before any of those finer questions matter, you have to be mentioned in the first place.

"Brand mention rate" answers: are we even part of the conversation, or invisible before the comparison begins?

Words you'll see, in plain English

These terms come up whenever people measure how often a brand is named. Here's what each means.

Brand mention rate

Out of all the questions you track, the share where AI names your brand at least once.

Tracked prompt

A specific question you run against an AI model to see how it answers.

Mention

Any time the AI's answer says your brand name, even once counts.

Consideration set

The short list of brands a model reaches for by default in your category.

Coverage gap

A set of prompts where you're never mentioned, a clear hole to fix.

Presence vs. quality

Mention rate measures if you show up; other metrics measure how well.

How to operationalize it

Four moves turn "how often are we mentioned?" into a metric you can grow.

Build a prompt set

List the real questions buyers ask in your category, then run them against each model.

Count the mentions

Measure the share of those answers that name your brand. That percentage is your mention rate.

Find the gaps

Group the prompts where you're never mentioned. Each cluster points to missing content or sources.

Close them deliberately

Earn coverage on the sources models cite for those prompts until your name starts appearing.

Why presence comes first

Sentiment, position, and citations only matter once you're in the answer. A low mention rate exposes a more fundamental problem: the model doesn't reach for your brand by default. Fixing presence is the prerequisite for every other AI visibility gain.

Your brand mention rate checklist

  • A representative prompt set reflects real buyer questions
  • The same prompts run across every model you track
  • Mention rate is calculated as a clear percentage
  • Prompts with zero mentions are grouped into gaps
  • Each gap is traced to a missing source or content type
  • Mention rate is reviewed before sentiment or position

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a mention?

A prompt counts once if your brand is named anywhere in the answer, no matter how many times it appears. That keeps the metric a measure of presence rather than of repetition, so a single clear mention and five passing ones score the same.

Why measure mention rate before sentiment or position?

Because presence comes first. Sentiment, position and citations only describe answers you are already in — a low mention rate exposes the more fundamental problem, which is that the model does not reach for you at all.

What makes a prompt set representative?

It has to reflect the questions buyers in your category actually ask, in their words, and the identical set has to run against every model you track. A set written in your own product language will flatter you and measure nothing useful.

My mention rate is low — where do I start?

Group the prompts where you are never named. Each cluster points at either missing content or missing third-party sources, and closing one cluster at a time is what moves the number.

Is a higher mention rate always better?

Not on its own. Being named in every answer at the very end is weaker than being named in half of them first, which is why mention rate is read alongside position rather than instead of it.
